Halewood College Art Workshops

Over the past couple of months, I have been doing art workshops with the 6th form textile students at Halewood College in Liverpool. I have really enjoyed working with the students. Some of my workshops include screen printing, working on Photoshop and hand/machine embroidery. The students have been looking at the theme of collections. They began the project by drawing their own personal collections and then scanned them into the computer and experimented with them on Photoshop. We then thought about how their computer work could be converted into textiles using print and embroidery. At the end of the project the students should have completed a wall hanging using all the techniques I showed them! Pictures of the workshops will be on their way soon!

Art of the Stitch

One of my textile hangings has been chosen to go on display in the 'Art of the Stitch' exhibition! I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. 'Indian Lady in Field with Swedish Horses' will be travelling round four venues across Europe including Birmingham, Germany, Hungary and Spain. Russian Doll and Japanese Figure Paintings

Inspired by the decorative figures I saw in Harrogate in November, I created these four paintings in the early part of January. I was drawn to the peaceful expressions on the dolls' faces and of course the vibrant colours and patterns.

I am also planning a new textile wall hanging and have come up with a design! If I get it finished in time, I would like to enter it into one of the competitions at the Festival of Quilts! I took part in the show last year and loved the friendly atmosphere at the show. It takes place in September at the NEC Birmingham and showcases quilts from countries around the world. There are lots of stalls at the show also selling fabrics and craft materials.

The Knitting and Stitching Show

I was recently chosen to exhib in the Graduate Showcase at the Knitting and Stitching show. The show travels around four venues in Birmingham, Dublin, London and finally Harrogate and is full of textile/craft stalls and artists/designers work who specialise in textiles. I have just finished the final leg on Sunday which was quite sad as I have really enjoyed the experience. The show gave me the chance to meet other graduates, sell some of my work and talk to the public about my textiles and designs.

Whilst I was in Harrogate I found a beautiful toy shop displaying Russian dolls and Japanese figures. The shop owner was just closing the shop for the day, but very kindly reopened it and let me take some photographs. I just love the beautiful colours and patterns which make up the dolls and most of all, the expressions on their faces. It's as if they all have their own personalities and stories to tell from the images they are decorated with. I can't wait to start drawing them!

New Paintings Created in October 2007

I've been busy creating new paintings for the Knitting and Stitching Show which will next be in Harrogate at the end of November.

I bought some Russian Dolls whilst on holiday in Majorca and just had to use them in a painting. The mermaid scene was taken from a children's theatre set which I saw at the Museum of Childhood in London.
